Question

Joey has acute severe pain following a surgical procedure performed 4 days ago. He has been dismissed for home care and has returned to the office for a follow-up visit. He tells you that although he continues to have severe pain, he is afraid to take the opioid that has been prescribed because he is afraid he will become dependent on the medication. This is Joey's first need for a strong analgesic, and he began taking it postoperatively 4 days ago.
