OSMOSIS is a special case of diffusion. In biology, Osmosis is the diffusion of water across the cell membrane that is dependent on the concentration of solutes, like Na+ and glucose, that cannot freely cross the cell membrane. Na+ and glucose can only cross the membrane through special protein transporters, channels, or pumps. Osmosis occurs because the cell membrane is semi-permeable, meaning some substances can freely cross the membrane while other substances cannot. In osmosis, net movement of water is from an area of low solute concentration to an area of high solute concentration. Why does water move? Water will move to equalize the concentration of the two compartments (dynamic equilibrium). To do this it will move to dilute the higher concentration solution. Complete the following statement...
