Question

A nurse evaluates a 22-year-old female in the emergency department with severe abdominal pain and diarrhea. She is 5'3," and 145 pounds. Her usual body weight six months ago was 154 pounds. The stomach pain has been occurring intermittently for the last six months. She does not know what has been causing it, but she feels it the most after eating. She notices the pain is worse when she eats at restaurants and fast-food facilities, and when consuming foods such as pizza, sandwiches, and pasta. She has been more tired than usual, taking naps during the day and struggling to complete normal daily activities. She noticed that she had developed red bumps on her elbows in the last few months, which she attributed to dry skin. Previous medical history includes asthma and Grave's disease. She takes a prenatal vitamin, Methimazole, and antacids occasionally. Her father has type 1 diabetes, but there is no other family history.
