Step 1

Find and research one of the following: international project, research, competition, community service, or service-learning, which leads to a demonstration of competency and leadership in global studies. 

• Identify what you have found as a project, research, competition, community service, or service-learning. Remember that projects are usually short-term with an end date, and service learning is usually academically based (offered through a class).
• Please give a detailed description of the project, research, etc., stating what it is, the purpose, who benefits, when and where the activity will take place, and how it relates to global studies.
• Reveal if this is an initiative through a company, organization, or other entity (and specify the specific name) or something you have created on your own.
• Describe your role in this activity as if you were going to participate in it.
• What do you feel your takeaway would be if you were to participate in this activity?

 Step 2

Find and research three (details specified below) conferences, lectures, or workshops related to other cultures or global issues that will take place this semester and that you would be interested in and able to attend. This means you will need to research events that are occurring shortly.

• Find one that is located in Indiana, one that is located outside of Indiana in the U.S., and one that is located in another country.
• List the details of each conference, lecture, or workshop as follows below. Please keep the information for each event together for ease of grading.

  • Organizers (name of company or organization responsible for the event)
  • Cost as a student (if any)
  • Purpose of event

Step 3

Find and research three professional membership groups or community organizations related to global issues that you would be interested in joining as a member - not as a volunteer. Try to find something with a local chapter or one that you can quickly be involved in online. Note that a membership group would have regular meetings, may have a membership fee, and typically is run by the members. This is different from an organization like the Red Cross, an actual company that allows volunteers to help with different initiatives. Make sure your organization has memberships which would be indicated on their website.

• Provide the following information for each of the three individual groups or organizations. Please keep the information for each group together for ease of grading.

  • List of initiatives
  • Meeting dates & times
  • Membership fees
  • In summary, summarize each organization, explain how it relates to global studies, and why you want to join. Please tell me what your role would be and what you would have to offer to this organization.

Step 4

Find and research three companies that regularly conduct international business and are located in Indiana.

• Provide the following information for each of the three companies. Please keep the information for each company together for ease of grading.
  • Name, address, phone, website of the company
  • Industry and type of business conducted (i.e., For Eli Lilly, it would be the health care industry, and they create pharmaceutical drugs. Also, you cannot use Eli Lilly.)
  • A brief history of the company including when it started, when it went global (or was it born global?), what significant countries they do business with, and how many locations worldwide they have.
