Assignment: African Leaders

Write a 4 to 5 paged reading response on the biography of ONE African leader based on Wilson, Lindy, Bereket Habte Selassie, Georges-Nzongola-Ntalaja, and Ernest Harsch.2015. African Leaders of the Twentieth Century: Biko, Selassie, Lumumba, Sankara (Ohio Short Histories of Africa). You must choose either Biko, Selassie, Lumumba, or Sankara not all 4.

Response paper should be based on the following: precolonial politics and society, colonialism, the independence period, the postcolonial state, patrimonial rule, and the transition to multiparty elections. Reading response paper should directly connect your leader's biography to three or more of the readings on these topics. You should use the life and achievements of your leader to highlight these themes as well as reflect upon the importance of these themes for understanding African politics.

Your essay will be graded on the following five criteria:

Question 1. Demonstrates fluency with the biography of the chosen leader.

Question 2. Demonstrates understanding of the content and/or arguments of at least three class readings.

Question 3. Makes thoughtful and compelling connections between the class readings and the biography. Chooses readings appropriate to the leader's life.

Question 4. Illustrates a general knowledge of the trajectory of African history; situates the life of the leader within the broader political and historical trends on the continent.
