Case: The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate an understanding of 5 concepts discussed this semester by defining and applying each one to a parent-child relationship in a film.
. Now that you've completed an analysis of parent-child relationships as depicted in several news articles, you will do the same thing with a full-length, feature film : Incredibles 2
The purpose of this assignment is to continue to demonstrate your knowledge of the concepts taught in this course and be able to apply them in an analysis of the featured child's relationship with a parent or adult who is raising the child. Choose concepts that relate to the film you have chosen. Be sure to consider the development needs of the child as described in Chapters 5-8.
In the first paragraph, provide the film's title, the year it was released, the director, and a brief summary of the plot including the setting. Describe the child and parent whose relationship you will analyze. Begin by selecting the child in the story who will be the focus of your paper. Some families in the films have multiple children. Focus on one child under the age of 18.
Select 5 concepts you will use to analyze the parent-child relationship. Unlike the Article Analyses, I am not providing a list of concepts. You can find lists of the concepts in the study guides for each of the exams. Select 5 concepts, at least 2 of which are discussed in the chapter that corresponds to the child's age. For example, Erikson's theory could be applied to a different-aged child than you did previously. By applying content from the course to the depiction of a parent-child relationship in the film, analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the relationship; how the circumstances this parent and child experience affect their relationship; and how the parent manages these circumstances as they raise their child. Look at parenting behaviors and the child's response either verbally or as seen in their behaviors.
Use the same format for linking concepts to the parent-child relationship that you used when writing the article analyses. Use separate paragraphs to address each concept.
Name the concept,
Define or describe it, and
Apply it to your analysis.
Use specific scenes or quotes from the film and/or quotes from the textbook to support your links.
You have 4-5 pages to write this analysis.
Be sure to choose relevant concepts for the developmental stage of the child you've selected. Chapters 5-8 discuss the developmental needs of children at different ages and how parents can respond best to those needs. Be sure to focus your analysis on the developmental needs of the child in the film you chose. Consider how the parent is responding to those needs.
In the final paragraph, consider the future of the relationship between the parent and child and the developmental outcomes for the child. Family films, as most of these are classified, often end with a happy view of the future. Your analysis may raise questions about the future and the roadblocks that could change the relationship. You are likely to find information in the textbook that would support your conclusions. In Chapters 5-8, look for the "implications for parents and professionals" paragraphs to help you with the conclusion.
