Identify and demonstrate the use of effective verbal communication strategies in the helping relationship.

Record a short conversation (5 mins) between you and your partner. In this conversation, you will be the helper and the other person the helpee. You will not be submitting your recording.
Set a timer for 5 mins and have a conversation about a fictional issue the helpee is having.
The helper should start the conversation by addressing confidentiality.
When the timer goes off, wrap up the conversation.
Switch roles. Each person should have a recording of them as the helper.
Review your recording and answer the questions provided on Blackboard. See the grading rubric for grading guidelines.

Questions:

1) Briefly describe how you explained confidentiality to the person you were talking with. After reviewing your recording, what could you have done to better explain confidentiality?

2) Describe one listening skill that you demonstrated in your conversation and explain why it would be helpful for the helpee. What was the helpee's response to you using this listening skill?

3) Describe an example of a verbal responding mode or skill that you demonstrated in your conversation and explain why it might have been helpful for the helpee. What was the helpee's response to you using this mode of responding?

4) Describe an example of a verbal responding mode or skill that you demonstrated in your conversation and explain why it might have been unhelpful for the helpee. What was the helpee's response to you using this responding mode?

5) Reflect on your typical communication style. What verbal responding mode(s) do you most often use? What other verbal responding modes would you like to use more of in your interactions with others?
