Demonstrate your understanding of key management concepts, including organisational change management.
SCENARIO
Congratulations! You have recently been awarded a contract as a management consultant to an organisation in the health field based in Victoria and have been brought in to provide high-level advice1.
The organisation has been affected by an event that requires some substantial organisational changes. You have been asked to prepare a report that explains the nature of the event and its impacts on the organisation, proposes a change management model to assist with the change management process, and suggests a message to use in communicating the changes to the public (via the organisation's Annual Report). Your report will be tabled at the next meeting of the organisation's Board/Council1.
THE TASK
1. Choose a health organisation of interest to you (one with an annual report to draw your information from). It might be a government body, a non-government organisation (NGO) or a private business.
2. Prepare a report that has the following sections.
SECTION 1. WHAT IS THE EVENT?
Choose and describe a hypothetical (made-up) event that might affect the health organisation of your choice in a significant way. For example:
A 20% budget cut by state or federal government (other sources of funds are not affected) Significant change in the health needs of a population group it serves
Sudden community demand for an existing service/program
Demand by government to switch to using a personal digital record (‘e-record') system (where the client/patient retains their own health record)
A corrupt act such as theft of thousands of dollars
Detection and exposure of the abuse of/harm to a client/patient or staff member
A publication that names the organisation as failing to reduce gender inequity, racism etc.
SECTION 2. WHAT ASPECTS OF THE ORGANISATION WILL CHANGE, AND WHY?
2a: Describe the health organisation, such as the type of organisation (e.g. NGO), what it does, its size etc.
2b: Describe six key features of the organisation, chosen out of the list below, that the event will likely have an impact on (you will need to use the Annual Report of the organisation as the source of this information).
Then, explain why and how the 6 selected features might change or need to change because of the event
SECTION 3. WHICH CHANGE MANAGEMENT MODEL SHOULD BE USED TO GUIDE THE CHANGE MANAGEMENT PROCESS?
Briefly describe and explain the key features of two change management models that the organisation could use to guide the process of organisational change.
Then select one to recommend to the Board/Council and CEO and justify your choice, that is, explain why this particular one is the most relevant or suitable in relation to the changes to be made by the organisation.
SECTION 4. WHAT SHOULD THE ORGANISATION SAY IN ITS ANNUAL REPORT ABOUT THE CHANGE?
Prepare a text for the next Annual Report of the organisation that explains the organisational changes that were made due to the event.
