This week, we have been learning about icons, the sacred images associated with Eastern Christianity. Since icons can be found in a variety of forms and media, I want to present you with the opportunity to explore some contemporary examples that demonstrate the potential for religious art to address war and conflict. As you may know, the country of Ukraine has been under attack by Russia since 2014; in 2022 Russia attempted to invade the entire country. All over Ukraine, many citizens have enlisted as soldiers in the army, and in many other countries fundraisers are being held to send supplies and equipment to these soldiers (first aid, medicine, body armor, antibiotics, etc.).

Below you will find several icons painted on body armor. This body armor was once worn by a Ukrainian soldier when they were shot by enemy forces, and it saved their life (see the bullet holes?). These icons were recently blessed at the most holy site of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Saint Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral.

I want you to pick one icon. Spend a little while looking at it, reflecting on what you see. In your post I want you to describe how the icon painter arranged the composition to fit the shape of the body armor. Where in the painting can the bullet hole (or bullet holes) be found? What is the visual effect of the bullet hole's place in the composition? Do you have a personal reaction to the artwork you chose?
