The largest symbol that Kafka employs in this story is representing Gregor as a bug. This was a deliberate and purposeful technique, and he is conveying a message to the readers about how Gregor is treated. As you have already read Part I, we can see the loyalty and dedication to family that Gregor exhibits in his working a job to pay off a debt that is not his own. We begin to sense his family's ill-treatment towards him by assuming their using him as a tool is not new behavior; perhaps he has endured years of unhappiness for their benefit. Gregor's feelings towards his family are not the same as their feelings towards him.
Please now read Part II of 'The Metamorphosis' pgs 105-122.
As you read, look for signs of Gregor's increasing animalistic behavior. These signs represent his decline, his acceptance of his different self, his transition of life.
Your task is to find quotations that demonstrate the complex relationships in the family. Please search for quotations that either:
A) Show Gregor's feelings about his mother, father, sister, and boss (at least 4 quotations [1 for each person], but can provide more if you like).
