CIVL 0012 Structural Design - Middel East College
Learning Outcome 1: Demonstrate the basis of the engineering principles of structural design covered in the module.
Learning Outcome 2: Interpret design data in terms of the underlying engineering principles embodied in codes of practice.
Assignment Objective
This assignment is concentrated to provide the adequate ability to analyze and designing simple structures in civil engineering work. Students are exposed to the concepts, principles tools, and techniques of analysis and design of the structure. This also provides an opportunity for the students to obtain a solid understanding of structural stability and behavior under different loading conditions. This will assist Civil Engineering students to carry out more accurate analysis and efficient design in construction work.
Assignment Tasks
Design a steel stand on which an Overhead Water Tank is to be constructed required for the purpose of water storage at the AKZ building of Middle East College. The stand includes a beam- column portal frame which are connected to the pedestals with fixed supports as shown in figure 1. Consider the height of stand as ‘H' and spacing between columns is S x L. The height of the water level in tank is ‘h'. The overhead tank is prepared of concrete with wall thickness t (m) including the bottom slab. Individual data of dimensions is provided in the attached table.
Consider density of water as 1000 kg/m3 and unit weight of reinforced concrete as 24 kN/m3. Make suitable calculations for steel design of the members according to Eurocode 3. Student individual data is provided in the attached excel sheet. Assume any other suitable data wherever necessary. All tasks are necessary to complete and try the word count to be limited to 1500 words of the report.
1. Make suitable analysis of the frame with overhead tank in order to calculate the load on beams and on columns.
2. Design two beams in each lateral direction of lengths ‘L' and ‘S' for ultimate limit state following Eurocode 3.
3. Design two columns in each lateral direction for ultimate limit state following Eurocode
3.
4. Investigate the following with the perspective of Oman:
• Cost comparison and feasibility study between RCC design & steel design.
• Sustainability considerations, health and safety and risk assessment issues.
• User needs and aesthetics, fitness for purpose, establishment of innovative solutions etc.
• Management of the design process
