Statistical Methods Lab Assignment -
Please answer the following questions by using R-Studio and show all work as dictated by the assignment guidelines. Final answers should be rounded to two (2) decimal places (where applicable).
Q1. The failure of conveying data in proper and clear visuals, as well as the fundamental lack of understanding of data associations has had real life consequences, as was the case with the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion in 1986. Referencing the data table on page 22 in the following paper on moodle, Tufte, E. (1997). The decision to launch the space shuttle Challenger. Visual and statistical thinking: Displays of evidence for making decisions, 16-31.
predict the damage index of the O-ring component at 26oF, the forecasted temperature on the Challenger launch date, January 28, 1986. Please use the data as presented and show the necessary visual. Although you do not have to read the whole paper for this question, I strongly suggest you do as it will bring context to the accident and also why it is important to have a good understanding of statistics.
Q2. Fifty houses that were sold in Montreal in 2018 are compiled with their listing and selling prices (in thousands of dollars) in house.csv. Test the claim of a realtor that the housing market is so strong there is no difference between the selling and listing price of a house in Montreal. A listing price is how much the homeowner wants for the house and the selling price is the actual amount the house is sold for.
Q3. The mean global temperature is set to rise by 0.9oC above the mean temperature of the years 1986 through 2005 by the year 2020 and carbon dioxide levels are expected to be 414 parts per million (ppm) by the same year. Using the dataset climate.csv, predict the extent of Arctic sea ice (Seaice in millions of km2) for the year 2020, where MGT is the mean global temperature (oC) and CO2 is mean annual carbon dioxide in ppm. Furthermore, could you predict the sea ice extent for the year 2050 using this data?
Q4. Four different data sets are presented in (fourdata.csv) as simple relationships (i.e. Y1 ∼ X1, Y2 ∼ X2...). Demonstrate the association and prediction of each relationship. This must inlude an investigation of each of the data sets by a visual plot. Also, find a way to improve the relationships where possible. Briefly explain your rationale for anything you demonstrate.
