Introduction
The research essay is the culmination of English 142. In writing an effective research- based essay, you have an opportunity to implement the critical source analysis skills you have discussed and put into practice throughout the semester-particularly the abilities to summarize, analyze, and synthesize arguments on a topic in an ongoing academic discourse. This project asks you to enter the conversation going on in the research, taking a focused approach to or position on the topic or how the topic has been considered/presented by the sources.
This essay should be based on a specific, relevant research question derived from your topic of inquiry, developed earlier in the semester. The paper should have a clear thesis/controlling purpose that grows out of your research and engages that research in an in-depth way. You should provide ample research-based evidence to support all points in the essay and should make sure that your essay uses rhetorical techniques effectively. You should integrate all source material to the paper with care, using summaries, paraphrases and direct quotations that are seamlessly integrated to the text and correctly cited using APA format, including a References page.
You should organize the research paper in a logical manner that makes reading easy and should make use of basic structural conventions such as a thesis statement, transitions and topic sentences. You should carefully edit your paper to eliminate all mechanical and grammatical problems and improve sentence-level clarity in the writing.
Activity Instructions
You will write a 5-7 page research-based essay using the following guidelines:
Topic: The topic choice should follow the specific prompt(s) provided by your instructor. Overall, your topic should be academic and/or professional in nature, possibly related to your major or chosen career path, and be focused on single theme or school of thought on that topic (e.g. the use of telemedicine in the healthcare field). The choice of topic should allow you to develop your own approach to or position on that topic (your thesis statement), which can be discussed in more detail in the body of the essay. Your choice should also give you the opportunity to incorporate a number of appropriate (as determined by your instructor) sources as supporting examples for your ideas.
When choosing the topic, remember that, while the content is important, the primary goal of this project (and course) is simply to learn how to analyze, choose, and
incorporate outside research effectively in the development of a college-level essay. Try to choose a topic that will allow you to practice the skills and techniques you're learning here and prepare you for the kinds of research-based writing you'll do in your major.
The topic for the final project will be the same one chosen previously in the term and used as the basis for the Analysis of a Scholarly Research Article and Annotated Bibliography assignments. While a variety of topics may be chosen, the final choice has to be approved by the instructor, who may suggest changes to make sure your topic is suitable for the course objectives and assignment requirements.
Purpose: Your general purpose will be to develop a thesis-based standard essay on your chosen topic, effectively incorporating outside research into the development and flow of your ideas, and using rhetorical methods to address and influence the audience. The emphasis should be on establishing and supporting your own approach to or position on the chosen topic in light of the greater overall picture of that topic, as seen in the research you've done.
Audience: You are joining a discussion on this topic that has likely begun long before you enter it. Your audience is your peers, both in the sense of your classmates and those already engaged in studying and debating this topic. As you advance in your major, "peers" will increasingly include anyone else studying in that field, whether in your class or not. For these reasons, a reasonably formal, academic tone is appropriate for this assignment.
