Role Play - RECOVERY PLAN

SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS ASSESSMENT 2a: ROLE PLAY

The premise for this role play is that you work for a service and are meeting with a person to discuss what they might want to have included in a recovery plan, so to identify goals. Your job is to listen to them and from what they are telling you determine what those goals/needs may be. You might have met them be fore, but you do not know much about them so you will have to ask them about themselves in order to explore their current situation and goals that might be then linked to their current situation. It would be helpful if at the beginning of the role play, you framed the conversation by reminding the consumer that you are meeting with them in order to discuss their recovery plan and goals.

Task 1: Demonstrate appropriate non-verbal communication strategies

You are seated in a relaxed/open posture You are leaning forward You establish and maintain appropriate eye contact You use minimal encouragers throughout interview

Task 2: Demonstrate paraphrasing

You are able to demonstrate paraphrasing techniques and show respect and understanding of the client's story and an understanding of their experience a minimum of two (2) times during the interview

Task 3: Demonstrate clarifying

You are able to clarify role expectations and establish relationship guidelines during the interview. You are able to demonstrate clarifying techniques in order to clarify aspects of the story and the persons understanding of their experiences a minimum of two (2) times during the interview.

Task 4: Demonstrate summarising

You are able to demonstrate summarising techniques minimally once (1) during the interview and are able to display a shared understanding of the impact of mental illness, recovery and the client's readiness and desire to self-advocate and participate.

Task 5: Demonstrate use of open and closed questions You are able to demonstrate appropriately placed use of open and closed questions techniques a minimum of three (3) times during the interview

Task 6: Client needs are identified

You are able to accurately identify a minimum of three (3) needs/goals of the client and explore some strategies in order to address the needs.

Task 7: Work in a collaborative partnership with client

You are able to demonstrate that you can:

• Establish a recovery-oriented collaboration

• Encourage client choice

• Acknowledge client values

• Explore strategies to manage challenges
