Learning Outcome 2: Critique historical and contemporary theories and perspectives for supporting individuals with a mental health condition and their carers.
Learning Outcome 3: Demonstrate independent research skills drawing on a diverse range of relevant sources and demonstrate communication skills for professional and academic audiences.
Context:
This assessment is about the ‘person first' perspective of mental health in the context of daily life with specific reference to educational experiences for individuals with a mental health condition.
This assessment will further develop your understanding of historical approaches toward mental health awareness and support, progressing to more contemporary and broad-minded support structures.
The assessment is prescribed for you to advance your analytical skills and your knowledge and understanding of the continuum of mental health well-being.
Instructions:
This assessment requires you to critically analyse the podcast case study presented here. Drawing on the literature and media presented in modules three and four, with specific reference to youth mental health, you will discuss the issues and challenges an individual and their carers face regarding the range of factors and varied support needs for day to day living and productive schooling experiences.
The responses require you to utilise problem-solving skills. You will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of mental health whilst using a person first perspective through comparing and contrasting learning experiences. Further, you will identify the support needs for both the individual and their carer.
The case study response should include the following structure:
Section 1.
- Introduce the case.
- Discuss the challenges faced in the individual's daily life, with specific reference to access to a positive schooling experience.
- Using a ‘person first' perspective for both the individual and carer, analyse the key issues of the case.
- Provide a rationale for how educational experiences can impact an individual with a mental health condition.
Section 2.
- Describe the support needs required for the individual and carer using a person first lens in relation to school experiences.
Section 3.
- Reflect on the impact of the changes in generational knowledge and practice covered in the course so far.
