Assessment - Lighting and Materiality Study

Learning Outcomes

1. Extend knowledge of idea generation to contemporary 3D design.
2. Integrate key concepts into knowledge of 3D theory.
3. Apply given tools and methods accurately and carefully in new situations.

Context:

This assessment is designed to develop your skills in interior visualisation, and ensure you have a better understanding of how lighting and cameras work in the 3D digital environment.

Instructions:

In this assessment task, you will produce a digital environment in 3ds Max by following the process outlined below:

1. Trace the .dwg floor plan file provided and create a spatial structure from this plan.

2. Incorporate the architectural elements you created during the online discussion forum exercises in weeks 1-6 into this space.

3. Create 4 clay renders of your scene showing both daylight and night time (artificial light) studies of the space. Demonstrate how lighting affects the shadows and the definition of objects.

4. Using inspiration images to get ideas for materiality, experiment with applying materials commonly found in the built environment to objects within your scene.

5. Develop your lighting so that it showcases your scene to its full potential in both daylight and nighttime situations. Create a minimum of 4 high resolution renders using Mental Ray (minimum 2 daylight and 2 night time renders).

6. Create a pdf presentation in InDesign or PowerPoint (see next page for details)

Outcome to be submitted:

• 1 x 3ds Max .max scene file
• 1 x .pdf presentation which includes text, images and consistent, professional layout using the list below for your content. Good spelling and grammar are always crucial.

Your pages should be organised as follows:

1. Title page: Your name, subject name, Assessment Brief 2 plus optional image of your best render incorporated onto the page.

2. Lighting Development Pages. Minimum 4 clay renders showing how lighting
affects your objects and the space in both daylight and night time situations. You can either apply same lighting option at different angles or different lighting options at the same angle within the space. These renders can be placed on the same page for comparison. Each clay render should include explanatory text about the type of light source(s) and their placement.

3. Materiality Page: Materiality and colour palette with labels.

4. Inspiration Pages: Inspiration images (minimum 3) for your lighting and inspiration images (minimum 2) for your concept.

5. 4 x Final Renders Pages: Minimum 4 renders (2 x daylight, 2 x night time) with materials. Place one render per page. These renders should be advantageous views of your space at eye level clearly labeled with the time of day (i.e. daytime, afternoon, dusk, night time etc).
Resolution 1200 X 900 pixels (or one dimension should be at least 1200pixels)

6. Reference Page. Reference the images sourced from the internet in Harvard or APA format.
