Fighting A Culture of Fraud:
Whistleblower Dinesh Thakur:
Some people whistleblow for personal gain or revenge. While their actions may benefit customers or the public, their motivations are still unethical. Let''s look at the 5 conditions for determining if whistleblowing is ethical.
Whistleblowing is ethical when:
1) When the product will cause serious or considerable harm to the public or break existing laws.
2) When the employee identifies a serious threat, he should report it to the organization and state the moral concern.
3) When the employee''s immediate supervisor does not act, the employee should exhaust the internal procedures and follow the chain of command.
4) The employee must have documented evidence that is convincing and reasonable to an impartial observer.
5) The employee must have a valid reason to believe that reporting the wrong-doing will result in changes necessary to remedy the situation.
Whistleblowing is potentially unethical in three circumstances:
1) When an employee is motivated by the desire for financial gain.
