Case Study: Nurses can gather patients' s cultural information through a variety of ways which include conducting a cultural assessment by asking patients directly or engaging in a dialogue with patients to obtain information about their values, beliefs, and practices. There can also obtain information by observing patients for certain behaviors that are present , for example, silence versus talk, silence is interpreted differently, and nurses should be able to understand some of the non-verbal cues presented and translate them into a form of information provided to them by patients. Additionally, some cultural models can be used to obtain cultural information, For example, the developmental model of intercultural sensitivity (DMIS), is used to explain how different individuals respond to cultural differences,(Perez, 2013)
Cultural competence relates to better patient care in the sense that, for one to be able to effectively offer care to patients in a culturally diverse setting, they have to poses sound knowledge about one's cultural identity before one could extend care to people from different cultures, understand values and abolish any existing assumptions. The process also involves understanding the needs of the patient before , during and after care. Cultural competence also places value on communication to ensure that there are no barriers that could lead to health disparities. Understanding of cultural differences help eliminates health eliminate barriers. It also provides equitable, understandable and quality care to diverse cultural communities by being responsive to health beliefs and practices, language , health literacy and other communication needs(Edelman,2021).
Question: Nurses demonstrate cultural competence through their efforts to show cultural awareness, knowledge on various cultural beliefs as well as their skills through patient interactions. They would also demonstrate their cultural competence through their ability to be respectful and responsive to the health beliefs and care needs of a diverse population
