The aim of the project is to demonstrate certain aspects of engineering materials in different applications.
The projects will be assessed on the basis of a written Research Report. The report should clearly show what you have learned from the project and it should contain at least 5,000 words excluding tables, figures and references. The report may follow the following structure:- Title page- Table of contents- Abstract- Background / Literature review- Body- Conclusions- References
Students can choose one of the following topics for their project:
- Biomedical materials- Aerospace materials- Automotive materials- Carbon: Different structures and uses- Steels: Advancements over the last 100 years- The many uses of Iron- Materials of the future- Smart materials- Thermal properties of material and applications- Electrical properties of material and applications- Materials used in electrical engineering- Materials used in civil engineering
You are required to inform the topic coordinator (via email) what topic from the above list you would like to select for your research project.
You are required to inform the topic coordinator (via email) what topic from the above list you would like to select for your research project. This needs to be done by Friday week 4. The report is due on Friday week 12. Email your research report (PDF file)

If in Figure 4.8, instead of a knife-edge follower, a flat-faced follower is to be used, would the displacement diagrams for both designs be identical? And, if not, what would be the difference?
Consider an adiabatic mixing chamber operating at steady state into which steam enters with quality of 0.9. Water enters through a separate inlet at 300C. At the exit the temperature is 1500C and mass flow rate is 2 kg/s. The pressure in the mixing c..
A large plastic casting with thermal diffusivity 6.0 x10^7 m2 /s is removed from its mold at a uniform temperature of 150 degrees C. The casting is then exposed to a high-velocity air stream such that the surface experiences a sudden change in temper..
Two force systems are applied to a right circular cylinder. Points A to D lie on the xz plane, and points E and F lie on the y´ plane. Determine if these force systems are equivalent.
