1. Introduction
For this assignment, you may select ANY product already available in the market, or ANY product that you may have designed in the past, alone or as a member of a group, and that product exists in any form (e.g. even in the initial state of a conceptual design). In any case, you have to clearly state the need served by the product you have selected, and include references.
Please Note: the product selected needs to be agreed and approved by the module leader via email before any work is carried.
2. Aims / Objectives
The aim of this assignment is to familiarize ourselves with typical procedures used in engineering design. The objectives of this assignment are:
- to understand the concept of "Design for Manufacturability" and apply a typical procedure to estimate a manufacturing cost of an assembly;
- to understand the concept of "Design for Assembly" and apply a typical procedure to estimate the cost of manual assembly;
- to understand the concept of "Failure Mode and Effect Analysis" and be able to identify possible failure modes, their significance, their effect and devise ways to reduce that effect;
- to use the industry-standard CAD software CATIA to prepare a technical drawing for TWO components (your choice) of the assembly you are studying, to BS8888 standard;
- to enhance communication skills through report writing.
3. Deliverables
There is only ONE deliverable file and that is a Report (in the form of a pdf file), to be uploaded through the designated link on the 5036MAA Aula page.
The report is anticipated to include:
- A "Design for Manufacturing" (DfM) Analysis, clearly presenting an APPROXIMATE estimation of a manufacturing cost. To this end, you may use (your free choice) a sub-system of the studied product, or even the entire product, and fully populate a DFM table. In addition, for ONE of the components included in the DFM table, you should present a detailed estimation of the respective manufacturing cost, i.e. present, in an Appendix, any calculations as well as the tables & charts you used, and show on these tables & charts the values you have selected.
- A "Design for Assembly" (DfA) Analysis, clearly presenting an APPROXIMATE overall assembly cost. To this end, you may use (your free choice) a sub-system of the studied product, or even the entire product, and fully populate a DFA table. In addition, for ONE of the components included in the DFA table, you should present a detailed estimation of the respective manufacturing cost, i.e. present, in an Appendix, any calculations as well as the tables & charts you used, and show on these tables & charts the values you have selected.
- Detailed technical drawing to BS8888 standard (with all necessary GD&T) for TWO components (your free choice) of the product you are studying. Clear drawings should be included in the report and in the form of an Appendix. For this task, do select components that:
o are NOT readily available in the market; and
o allow you to demonstrate a thorough knowledge and understanding of GD&T;
