ASSIGNMENT
Written Critique - Review and critique of a case study that depicts the care provided to a patient and their family in a palliative setting. Critical analysis will be based upon a Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) to improve patient care
Purpose: Each student will review and critique the care given in a Case Study to be provided. It is essential for students to demonstrate an understanding of how theory translates into practical nursing care. The critique will utilise contemporary evidence-based literature and standards to support the selection of ONLY ONE suitable Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) relating to the care needs of the patient and family presented.
To complete this task you will need to discuss and critique relevant elements of the CPG and case study whilst upholding the National Palliative Care Standards at least one of:
• NSQHS
• NMBA standards and/or
Purpose
Students are required to demonstrate an understanding of how theory translates into practical nursing care and how evidence underpins best practice. Each student will review and critique the care given in the Case Study provided according to their choice of ONLY ONE of the provided Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG's) best suited to the highlighted discussion.
You need to choose one of these only to demonstrate the area of care that you are providing a critique of. You are not expected to look for other CPG's to support your work, however evidence based practice of peer reviewed journal publications are expected to further reinforce the critique.
Clinical Practice Guidelines
CPG's
What are they?
Why are they important?
How do they help us to maintain high levels of care?
Do we improve our care by reflection and updating CPG's through evidence Based research?
Case Study
As described in the Unit Outline you are now required to select an appropriate CPG out of the CPG's that have been provided:
• The CPG's to select from are:
o Care of the Dying patient
o End of Life Care
• Review and critique the care given to the patient against the CPG you have selected and provide evidence to support your critique through additional research that you will undertake
• Highlight the importance of the National Palliative Care Standards and at least one of the NSQHSS and/or the NMBA Standards and how they influence our practice
• Demonstrate knowledge on the illness trajectory of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in line with Palliative Care Principles
Assessment Task Two
• Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG's) for Task 2
Please select ONLY ONE CPG to critique and discuss the care provided to Tyler in the Case Scenario found in the Green Booklet above.
o Read the Unit Outline and Rubric carefully
o All Criterion in the rubric provide clear guidelines on how to proceed
o Review and critique the care provided to Tyler according to the CPG selected. Could his experiences through palliative care specifically at the end of his life been different if one of these guidelines was followed more closely? Provide additional peer reviewed evidence to support why or why not?
