Assessment Task

Learning Outcome 1: Literature survey: Select, analyse, and evaluate literature related to an engineering research question.
Learning Outcome 2: Communication skills: Demonstrate advanced communication skills through field specific analytic documentation and presentations.

Overview and requirements
The critique is expected to consist of four sections: Introduction, Summary, Assessment, and Conclusion. The Critique task will be marked against the below guidelines for these sections. Additionally, the overall presentation, style, and formatting will be considered. Please see further details in the relevant tutorial material.

Introduction
The introduction section should be relatively short, approximately one paragraph, and mention the following:
Title, authors, publication date and venue (name of journal or conference), and topic of the article
Main argument or purpose (aim) of the work.
A concluding brief statement of your evaluation. This signposts what your full evaluation of the work will be - for instance, it may indicate whether it is a positive, negative, or mixed evaluation.

Summary
The summary is not the main focus of the critique and should normally be shorter than the Assessment (see next section). At this stage you are just summarizing the article without judgement. The length of the summary is normally 1-2 paragraphs.
The summary should address (where relevant):
What was the study about?
What specific objectives / research questions did the authors have
What was their methodology: what methods did they use, e.g. data/analysis, theoretical study, mathematical modelling, computer simulations, experiments, etc.
What were the major results/outcomes

Assessment
This section should give a systematic and detailed assessment of the different elements of the work, evaluating how well the creator was able to achieve the purpose through these. This section is the focus of the critique. The assessment should identify both the strengths and weaknesses of the article and evaluate its success in light of its purpose. The assessment should examine (where relevant):

External factors
Authors' credentials- do they have education/background in the area of the article, have they published before (in general, and specifically in the topic of the article).

The publication
The venue where it was published (is it a peer reviewed journal or conference? Is it reputable?)
Publication date - is it recent, or likely to be outdated?
References - does the article cite relevant, peer reviewed and recent (relatively to its date) literature?
The writer's assumed audience, article's potential audience (in your
own assessment).

Internal factors
Does the work present original / new contribution, e.g. does it add to the understanding of key ideas or theories or produce new results? Does the article engage (or fail to engage) with key concepts or other works?
Is the work presented objectively or subjectively? E.g. do the authors mention potential drawback of their work, or only highlight the benefits?
Is the applied methodology effective in producing the results and the conclusions of the work?
What assumptions underline the work? Do they affect its validity?
Were the aims achieved? Use your own assessment rather than that of the authors. What evidence are provided, and were they interpreted fairly?

Conclusion
The conclusion of the critique is normally a short paragraph, consisting of:
Your overall judgement of the work. E.g. is it relevant/useful/reliable, what is the overall quality as evaluated in the Assessment section.
A brief summary of the key reasons for your evaluation

Presentation
The evaluation should be written in formal academic style, logically presented, follow the page length and formatting requirements, and free of grammatical errors or typos. Group and order your ideas into paragraphs. Start with the broad impressions first and then move into the details of the technical elements. Reference formatting should follow IEEE style. Further document and formatting requirements:
The length of the critique should be between 600 and 800 words.
Use the attached template (Critique template)
Do not include a title page or table of contents
Name and student number should be clearly visible on the first page.

Critique The critique should communicate your understanding of the article's main points, and offer an analysis of its strengths and weaknesses. Moreover, the critique should comment on the articles usefulness (significance) to your field.

Complete the critique using the template, according to the Critique task description (brief).
