Health Economics
An introduction to the core theories and concepts of economics and their applications in public health practice and policy.
This module will cover
(a) key concepts in health economics, globalisation and health;
(b) demand and supply and the economies of scale;
(c) health care markets and efficiency; (d) economic evaluation of public health interventions; and
(e) promoting equity and the role of governmental and non- governmental agencies.
• Provide knowledge and understanding of basic concepts and principles, and the interface between health economics and global health promotion.
• Introduction and overview of different techniques of economic evaluation and their advantages and disadvantages.
• How different priority setting frameworks incentivise the allocation of resources in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) vs. high-income countries (HICs).
• Market failure in healthcare systems and the role of governmental and non- governmental interventions.
• Differential approaches to public health priority setting from the perspectives of equity and efficiency.
Learning Outcome 1: Use key concepts of health economics to critically analyse economic influences on public health decision making.
Learning Outcome 2: Critically evaluate the structure and function of healthcare markets in different national contexts.
Learning Outcome 3: Appraise and critique different approaches to economic evaluation and their application in different national contexts.
Learning Outcome 4: Critically examine how social, economic, political and ethical factors influence priority setting frameworks based on different equity and efficiency concerns.
Learning Outcome 5: Critically reflect on the key issues and problems facing global health financing, resourcing and economic efficiency.
