Question
Most authors love writing books and short stories. They do it because they can't imagine doing any other job, but they also want to make a decent living. Online services have made it easier for people to have access to books, but they have changed the business model of authors dramatically. One upside of these services is that authors can easily tell how many times their books and stories have been read. When they see that their work is being appreciated, it reinforces their beliefs that they are capable of writing more and better - it's like virtual kudos! A downside is that authors can put in hours and hours of effort to write and edit good books and stories, but they can make very little money in return. Online services tend to place books in accordance with the popularity of the authors in the past, meaning that most book-writers will not make an income comparable to what a person with minimum-wage job would make. Some authors know it would be easier to make a living working at a fast food restaurant than writing books and short stories. Not only that, but famous authors can put in very little effort into writing new books, as their names will still be announced on the first page of online services that offer books! So, even though many authors believe they are capable of writing amazing and interesting books, they know that high quality work doesn't necessarily lead to lots of money... You can be an excellent writer who has original and innovative ideas, but another author whose books (especially new ones) are not as good can be ten times as famous and make hundreds of thousands of dollars more! Also, owners of these online services do almost no work, and they still make lots of money. This may explain why thousands of authors recently decided to create a new social movement demanding the government to take legal action to ensure that local, less "famous", authors do not find themselves in a disadvantageous position when writing new books and stories.
QUESTION - Use equity theory to explain the writers' action to demand a legal action from the government through a new social movement. Use the information in the case to support your answer.
