Throughout attempted dehydration of ethanol using diluted sulfuric acid diethyl ether is the major product rather than expected ethylene gas. Give the mechanism that accounts for formation of this product. Dehydration under this condition needs formation of the primary carbocation, which is highly unlikely. Explain what alternative reaction can you expect for protonated primary alcohol?
