A population of HIV viruses in a patient (Links to an external site.) consists of several variants resulting from the high rate of mutation due to the inaccuracy of the reverse transcriptase enzyme. Some of the variant strains of HIV contain versions of reverse transcriptase with various modifications that allow the enzyme to function with varying degrees of efficiency in the presence of dideoxy nucleotide antiviral drugs such as AZT. Some of the HIV strains have little resistance to AZT while others are very resistant. If this patient is treated with AZT what type of selection is likely to take place within the HIV population in his body: stabilizing, directional, disruptive, cyclic, OR drifting?
