Assignment:
The author of our course textbook defines religion as 'a system of beliefs or practices concerning the divine, an ultimate reality, or the transcendent.' While this definition may encompass a broad spectrum of religious traditions, it doesn't completely align with my spiritual understandings and beliefs. This recognition underscores that religion has a purpose; it distinguishes itself from everyday life without religion. Presumably, religious and non-religious people would paint a house similarly (Corduan, 2012).
Religion is a deeply personal and individualized experience beyond just beliefs and practices. It is a way of connecting with the divine or the transcendent that is unique to each person. It is a source of comfort, guidance, and meaning in one's life.
The textbook also mentions that religion involves rituals, symbols, and sacred texts, essential aspects of many religious traditions. However, religion is more than just following rituals or reading texts. It is about experiencing a sense of connection and unity with something greater than oneself.
In summary, while I respect the textbook's definition of religion, I believe it's crucial to acknowledge how individuals experience and comprehend their spirituality. Religion is not merely a set of beliefs or practices but a method of exploring and discovering meaning in the world.
