DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

1. The Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations are called the "proto-Greek" cultures. In what ways do these societies lay the groundwork for later Greek culture? In what ways do the later Greeks "improve" on their forebears or reject what the Minoans and Mycenaeans did?

2. Discuss the use of epic tales from the heroic age in recreating an understanding of the past. Are these tales supported by the material evidence? Are these accurate representations of Dark Age society?

3. Why was there growing conflict between the social orders in Greece? Do you think the different reactions made by the various poleis increased the possibility of conflict between the different city-states? Why or why not?

4. Some historians claim that the Greeks invented the West's definition of "freedom." According to the primary sources we've looked at this week, how did the ancient Greeks define "freedom?" Does this definition reflect our modern notions of what it means to be free? Why or why not?
