In my former office, we would frequently turn away clients who needed help, but did not meet the legal definition of a disability due to lack of documentation and therefore did not qualify for services. I always dreaded this part of the job, but found there are softer ways to break this news to someone, including not simply turning them away, but spending time to explain why they don't qualify, what they need to qualify and next steps for them to take. In addition, we always handed them a list of other resources that might be helpful for them so they never walked away empty handed. Class, how would you let a client know they didn't qualify for services?
