For the news analysis, everyone will read the same news article to write an analysis, the New York Times article "There Was Definitely a Thumb on the Scale to Get Boys."
READING INSTRUCTIONS FOR NEWS ARTICLES:
First, read the whole article and be able to answer:
- What do we know about the source? is it objective? does it have a perspective?
- Do we learn anything about the writer? why or why not?
- What year was the article published? Who is the audience?
- What kind of support is offered in the article to make it persuasive or informative?
GUIDELINES FOR WRITING A NEWS ANALYSIS
CONTENT INSTRUCTIONS
Write a 200 to 250 word ( one to two page) draft analysis that addresses all of the following:
1. Cite your news article: Title, author, newspaper or journal, date of publication, link to the article
2. BRIEFLY (about one sentence) describe the source that published the article.
- What do you know about the source and its reputation? Is it a mainstream news outlet? What is its political slant (liberal, conservative, other)? How do you know this?
- Is this published by an institution or an organization? If so, describe the institution/organization. Check out its website. What is its position/purpose?
1. BRIEFLY (about 2 or three sentences) summarize the article.
2. Reflect on the article's relationship to course themes:
- Use AT LEAST one author and critical reading from class to to describe and analyze the news article's reporting on gender, race, and/or sexuality. You can use the critical reading to relate it to course themes we have discussed, for example, gender hierarchy, power and ideology, patriarchy, separate spheres, intersectionality, etc.
- Note any ways your article deepens, expands, or challenges your understanding of gender, race, and/or sexuality.
