Others are enamored with the idea of employing technology to enhance and improve our lives, and some even champion what has come to be called transhumanism: the idea that should re-make human nature entirely. The new biotechnologies can merge with other technologies (including computers) to transform our species. Indeed, the nineteenth century German philosopher Nietzsche once proclaimed that man is "a bridge and not a goal." Watch this VERY short video defining transhumanism.

Most enthusiasts of the new biotechnologies do not go as far as endorsing transhumanism, but think we are, at the very least, on the cusp of an exciting and fruitful moment in human history. A future without genetic disorders, mental illnessness, and a more convenient metabolism can be thought of a liberation from the arbitrariness and even cruelty of nature.
