Defining the Hollywood Celebrity
The actress Kate Hudson once said, Somebody can become a celebrity for being stupid. That is what it's turned into." Indeed, in contrast to the celebrities of Hollywood's Golden Age (19308-1960s), celebrities today often lack glamor and talent. First, the celebrities of Hollywood's Golden Age dressed with unrivaled class. For example, Elizabeth Taylor, the legendary actress, wasn't just a good dresser, she was a style icon. She was also the good friend of another style icon, Michael Jackson. Elizabeth Taylor wore both couture evening dresses and casual daytime wear with panache. In contrast, many celebrities today appear undignified or unkempt. Often, tabloid magazines show actresses scantily clad on the red carpet or in sweat pants at the grocery store Furthermore, being a celebrity used to hinge on talent. For instance, Taylor, who won multiple Oscar awards, became a celebrity based on her acting ability. She also showed her talents in business and marketing through the creation of a successful cosmetics line. Taylor loved fine jewels, so her former husband, Richard Burton, once gave her a 69-carat diamond ring. On the other hand, the talent of many of today's celebrities, especially those in reality TV shows, is unclear. One father of a so-called celebrity doesn't even understand why his daughter, the star of a reality show that takes place in New Jersey, is famous, given that she doesn't sing dance, or act. In sum, celebrities today are well known, but they often lack the glamor and talent that launched the former stars into the limelight.
