Write a 200- to 300-word short-answer response to the following:

Device Management

Disk scheduling is very important because the processor is much faster than the disk, so it's highly likely that there will be multiple outstanding disk requests before the disk is ready to handle them. Because disks have non-uniform access times, re-ordering disk requests can greatly reduce the latency of disk requests. For instance, two requests to the same track are much faster to process in sequence than requests to different tracks. Similarly requests to nearby tracks are faster than requests to distant tracks. A crafty OS will then try to reduce latency and increase disk throughput by reordering disk requests to best utilize the disk.

Concurrency

Users are themselves concurrent as they work on more than one task at the same time. The client/server system is also concurrent. However, concurrent systems have some issues such as race conditions. Can you discuss this issue?

Concurrency

Deadlocks can be resolved by acquiring resources in a specific order. This can work in some situations but not all. what other issues are there with concurrency besides deadlocks?

For this assignment, you will choose from the following options:

• Option 1- GNU: Write a 2-page paper defining and describing the GNU public license and its role.

• Option 2- Open/Closed Source: Write a 2-page paper defining and comparing open source and closed source operating systems. Provide examples of each.

• Option 3- OS emulator: Locate an operating system emulator and experiment with a system type (e.g. Windows or Unix) opposite of what you are currently using. Write a 2-page paper describing your experiences with your chosen system compared to your current operating system.
