Question

Tolstoy points to faith as the only viable means of gaining meaning in life. He defines faith as "irrational knowledge." However, traditionally, knowledge and rationality are essentially related; i.e., the idea of knowledge that is irrational seems contradictory to most thinkers we've studied. Please defend an interpretation of Tolstoy's characterization of faith as "irrational knowledge," being sure to clearly explain what you judge him to mean by thus defining faith. In the end, you should take a position either supporting or defending this unique understanding of faith, and, of course, offering an argument defending your interpretation.
