Sociologist C. Wright Mills defined the sociological imagination as "the vivid awareness of the relationship between personal experience and the wider society" (1959). Sociological imagination enables us to "grasp history and biography and the relations between the two within society" (1959). In other words, it is the ability to understand how personal experiences are shaped by larger social forces. You are your own person with your own story (biography), but you are influenced in a million ways by the social structure and people who came before you (society).
