Case Study: You are the Risk Manager for Sinclair Memorial Hospital. You received a call from a female HIM employee who was an Emergency Department patient last month. For the sake of confidentiality, we'll refer to her name as "Dionne". Dionne believes that her medical information in the hospital's electronic health record was inappropriately accessed by other hospital employees and the result of her pregnancy test was "gossiped" to her boyfriend. As the Risk Manager, you are tasked with investigating this claim. Follow these guidelines and procedure principles to develop ONE report that includes information reflecting risk analysis, incident detection, and incident response plan.
Question: How you format your report is up to you. There is no required report format for you to follow. However, your report must include the following components:
1. Define your role as a risk manager.
2. What is the purpose of the risk management program?
3. What information should be required from the complainant?
4. In starting your investigation, what evidence should be gathered? (Hint: How would you determine who accessed the patient's medical record?)
5. What potential interviews can you identify that may occur as a result of your investigation?
6. Define a potentially compensable event and determine if this situation qualifies as a potentially compensable event. Defend your response.
7. Assuming that no wrongdoing by other employees could be identified, are there any policies or procedures that need to be developed? Is there any employee education that needs to occur?
8. Assuming that no wrongdoing occurred, summarize your findings and points that you will share with Dionne in your closing meeting with Dionne.
