Case Study: You've been reading about effective design and the rhetorical strategies implied by particular design choices. Most of this class's concern is with "ethos" or the presentation of character through a document. For example, in the past, a course like this would spend time (too much time in my opinion) on having the proper paper for a resume and cover letter to convey a "professional ethos," meaning the author's use of quality paper demonstrates their credibility as a professional. Sending in a crumpled up document with poor quality paper and ink would convey a negative ethos just as having a resume with misspellings, grammatical mistakes, etc. would convey a negative ethos.

Questions: In Technical Communication (and professional writing generally), appeals of ethos are much more likely than other appeals, but they're not simple individual messages. When you communicate on the job, you're communicating the organization's ethos, and you may or may not be identified on the correspondence. This prompt has two parts:

1) define what you believe a professional ethos to be and why-what experiences have led you to such a conclusion-and

2) reflect on the attributes of a document you associate with conveying a professional ethos
