“Ahuja and Carley (1998) define a virtual organization as a geographically distributed organization whose members are bound by a long-term common interest or goal, and who communicate and coordinate their work through information technology” (Baack 2012). There are pros and cons to having an organization in this structure.
Pros:
Higher productivity as a result of employees being able to set their own hours
Letting employees work remotely when they move allows the organization to retain their knowledge and the investment they have in that employee
Ensures diversity
Attracts more talent
Less distractions for employees- (not being interrupted with phones, meetings and colleagues)
Low cost for office space
Cons:
Opens security issues
Loses the employee interaction benefits
Weakens communication-office employees often cannot communicate during the hours someone remotely works
Technology devices and concepts have had impact on organizations that are virtual or allow employees to work remotely. Cell phones- smart phones- make it possible to stay in touch with anyone anywhere any time either through actual phone calls, text messaging, apps, emails and more. Social media is often a way for business’s that are just starting up for to have free advertising and reach bigger markets. Google drive is a way to share and edit documents with people who work in different areas. Pay pal is a system many people are using to send and receive money whether personal or work related. There are many more devices and concepts which have made an impact on organizations. I imagine we will all name many more.
