Assignment:
Discussion: COVID-19 and Coding
Information
You will have an opportunity to explore coding for COVID-19 and how to train coding staff given specific scenarios.
Instructions
Part 1: Share one of the following:
- Define the World Health Organization and the role they play in monitoring the world's health.
- What role does the CDC play in monitoring the USA's health?
Part 2: You are responsible for training coding staff on how to code for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). Demonstrate to your staff how to code one of the following cases based on these three items:
Case 1: A patient who is suspected of having the virus seeks ER services; no virus was found. The patient presents with an upper respiratory infection, fever, and chills.
Case 2: A patient who is admitted for the virus; is discharged in three days' time. Since it is a virus, no antibiotics were given. The patient is noted to have SARS as well.
Case 3: A patient presents with symptoms of COVID-19 after being exposed to individuals at a party. After the study, tests confirm COVID-19.
Case 4: The patient returns for a follow-up visit regarding COVID-19; all symptoms have resolved.
Items to Address
a. Clearly identify the case chosen.
b. Clearly identify the coding pathway (steps within the Index and Tabular List) of the case.
c. Clearly identify why the case is coded as such based on any guidelines, e.g. Coding Clinic and/or CDC guidelines for example.
d. What is the one thing you took away from learning about coding for COVID-19?
