Essay Format and Structure

Type the essay in 12-point font and paginate it, using single- sided pages and double-spacing. Structure the essay as follows:

1. Introduction (provide a brief description of the aims of the essay)

2. Uncertainty and skin in the game (use Sandis and Taleb (2017) to define the term ‘skin in the game'; referring to the Covid-19 pandemic, then use Pol and Reveley (2017) to explain why it is difficult to make accurate predictions and good decisions under conditions of uncertainty)

3. Organisational example(s) (give at least one specific example of an organisation where, against a backdrop of uncertainty, a wrong prediction or bad decision by a senior figure or manager shows that they lack skin in the game; name the person who made the prediction or decision and explain how it detrimentally affected others)

4. Ethical symmetry (use Sandis and Taleb (2017) to define the term ‘symmetrical ethics'; explain how achieving greater ethical symmetry might have minimised the harm the senior figure or manager caused to others)

5. Conclusion (summarise the central themes and findings of the essay)

6. List of References

Information: Employees, managers and other organisational stakeholders are experiencing considerable uncertainty due to the flow-on economic and labour market effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. With reference to the pandemic or its aftereffects, give at least one specific example of an organisation (e.g. the Reserve Bank of Australia) where - against a backdrop of uncertainty - a wrong prediction or bad decision made by a senior figure or manager shows that they lack skin in the game. Name the person who made the prediction or decision. How did their lack of skin in the game detrimentally affect other people? How might symmetrical ethics have minimised the harm they caused to others?

You must cite in your essay the two Session 2 (Week 5) readings

- namely, Sandis and Taleb (2017) on symmetrical ethics and Pol and Reveley (2017) on uncertainty - as well as at least five other academic journal articles relevant to the topic. (For a definition of ‘academic journal article' see Assessment 1, note 6.)
