A hypothesis function in the research process is to define the relationship between two variables. The purpose of a hypothesis is to find the answer to a question. According to Yegidis & Weinbach (2018), a research hypothesis is an uncertain answer to a research question based on existing knowledge and a prediction of what the researcher will find.

The hypothesis I generated for my research question is "Due to generational damage done to Native Americans; it is in their primary interest to preserve Native culture from overexposure in the Child Welfare System."

The dependent variable in my hypothesis is "the Generational damage done to Natives." The independent variable in my hypothesis is "the preservation of culture from the Child welfare system." The hypothesis's function is to define the relationship between two variables, independent and dependent variables. Yegidis & Weinbach (2018) reported that a variable is an attribute or characteristic that differs in quantity or quality among different persons, objects, time, and places. The dependent variable is the variable whose variation is the researcher's primary interest in understanding and explaining. The independent variable is "the variable whose variation is the researcher's primary interest in understanding and explaining." (Yegidis & Weinbach, 2018). The researcher manipulates the independent variable so that its effects on the dependent variable are monitored and recorded.
