Assignment:
By now, you should have watched the video on Riis and read the selections from How the Other Half Lives as well as read the chapter on Realism and Naturalism, the short biography of Crane, and his short story "The Dark Brown Dog." I would also expect you to have read my lecture notes. Answer each of the following questions and submit your answers to the corresponding drop box.
For this discussion activity, please respond to the following questions:
1. This question is weighted twice and counts 4 points: Describe the world of the Bowery in which the boy lives. What is life like in that part of New York City at the time and why? Engage the lecture notes here. What is life in the Johnson household like specifically? Use concrete specifics to answer this question. Use direct specifics from the story and the supporting readings.
2. The rope around the dog's neck is an objective correlative -- in other words, it connects or correlates to the other images in the text that suggest entrapment or defeat. What other images of entrapment and an inability to choose or move forward without failure does this story manage to capture. Choose at least three other images that suggest this sense of defeat and explain them in relation to the rope around the dog's neck: how do all of these images add up to suggest the hopelessness of life in the Bowery?
3. Though the boy has been conditioned to react to his father's drunkenness by hiding, the dog lacks this understanding and becomes a victim of his environment. Explain.
4. According to the video that you watched on Riis, what major public official shows up to help Jacob Riis and why was he moved to do so?
Discussion Criteria and Grading Expectations
To get full credit for your answers, your responses should be detailed, providing concrete examples from the text. Prose should be clear and clean. Use full sentences, and proofread your answers. You will not receive credit for answers that are vague or poorly written or rely on opinion rather than textual evidence for support. This is an individual assignment; do not reference sources outside of this module to complete the questions. Your work should be your own.
