Topic cultural diversity
A nine year old boy Bruno living in Berlin Germany in 1934 world changes drastically after he was forced to leave his friends behind in Berlin to move to a house located a few yards away from a Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz where his father was recently made the Commandant of the Jewish concentration camp. During his stay at Auschwitz Bruno and his sister Gretel received weekly German History lessons from their tutor Herr Litz, who their father, referred to as a "good country man." All young people in Germany were indoctrinated in the beliefs that the German breed is considered to be the Arian breed "pure breed" and being born of that breed automatically puts them at a higher ethnic and racial status. Herr Litz explains to Bruno that books are important, but not story books on Exploration adventures.
He questioned Bruno on how much he knew about his family's heritage and history. When Bruno responds that he didn't know very much, Herr Liszt told him, "Then this is what I am here to change......to get your head out of your story books and teach you more about where you come from. About the great wrongs that have been done to you." At this point in time, the children know very little about their homeland, so they can easily be influenced by this tutor. Herr Litz tactic is to obviously concentrate on the cultural differences of Germans and Jews.
The children were made to read History books that echoed the following: "The Jew slandered us and incited our enemies, they corrupted us through bad books, he marked our literature and our music everywhere, his influence was destructive. The eventual result of which was our nations collapse. The aim of the Jew is to become the ruler of Humanity; the Jew is not creative but destructive. He is the enemy of culture; thousands of Germans have been made poor by the Jews." Nine year old Bruno unable to comprehend the intense dislike of another nation interrupts while his sister is reading and says "But I don't understand how one man could cause an entire nation to fall" The tutor retorts "the Jew, refers to ALL Jews!!" Bruno then asks "There is such thing as a nice Jew though, is there? "I think Bruno if you ever found a nice Jew you'd be the best explorer in the world!!!"
