Assignment:

Biomolecules are molecules typically found in living organisms. They are represented by many different groups including carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. The primary component of living things is water. Thus, cells contain biomolecules and water. Select one type of biomolecule (carbohydrates, proteins, lipids or nucleic acids) and describe its chemical structure. Then describe how this structure will interact with a water molecule.

. Define the general chemical structure of your chosen biomolecule.

. Identify any functional groups that the biomolecule typically contains.

. Indicate whether this molecule would or would not be soluble in water.

. Explain how water would interact with this substance (i.e. Would it surround it? Would it form bonds with it? etc.)

. Draw an image that illustrates how the example molecule and water molecules would interact (hand-drawing is fine).

. Properly cite any sources that you use to support your ideas (you should use at least one source).
