You are the proud Owner of Centennial's SLT Emporium, a specialty cold treats store. You are taking a course at College and have become aware that there are a variety of leadership styles you could use.

The appropriate style can be based on several variables.

Different Situational / Contingency Theories each define the elements a leader needs to consider differently. 

Consider the following, then provide your determination: 

1. Which leadership style would you suggest for each? 

The styles to select from are: autocratic, participative, and laissez-faire, and each is to be used once.

2.  A short explanation of your reason[s].

a) Mintz Pepper has worked at Centennial's since it opened 35 years ago. Even though Mintz is expert at handling anything that comes up in the store, he never wanted to be Manager because he doesn't like administrative paperwork, even though he is quite capable of dealing with it. His passion is to be better and better and to be able to create new treats. Everyone else is out sick today so you and Mintz are the only ones able to cover the store during the Valentine' s Day rush.

What leadership style will you use? Why?

b) Pepi LaPew isn't doing a great job [maybe "ok"], but his heart is in the right place. He's gotten the chocolate-covered nuts mixed in with the soft caramels again!. Some of your customers are not happy about this. Pepi has been with you at the store for 3 years. He is always trying to be helpful and seems to always be eager to learn new things.  Pepi has some new ideas, like developing a line of flavored popcorn. What leadership style will you use with Pepi? Why?

c) Marsha Mellow is about to get stuck again! This is Marsha's first job. Her parent told her to "go get yourself a part-time job!" and she's a little nervous. She doesn't know a peanut from a coconut and panics when a customer asks for the All-Canadian Two and a Half Supreme Sundae. You don't want to chew Marsha out, since she just started a little while ago. What leadership style will you use with Marsha? Why?
