1) A Grignard reagent is an organomagnesium halide (or R-Mg-X). Explain the difference in the reactivity of the carbon bonded to the halide in an alkyl halide (R-X) versus the carbon bonded to the magnesium in a Grignard reagent.

2) Grignard reactions require a solvent such as diethyl ether. Please explain what the purpose of the solvent is besides dissolving the reagents. (Hint: What specific purpose does diethyl ether have in the formation of the Grignard reagent?)
