Question 1: (2 paragraphs) Please find an example from the news media from January 2022 or later, of a former, existing or proposed metals or minerals mine (but not fossil fuels) in Canada that describes one or more environmental impacts. Be sure to identify (a) the environmental impact(s), (b) whether the company or government was doing anything to address the environmental impact (c) what stage of the mining cycle (p. 249 of textbook) is most responsible for the environmental impact.
Question 2: (2 paragraphs) On page 271 of your textbook, the author defines 'sustainable mining' this way:
"Simply put, there should be a net benefit from the mining, not only for the mining company and the host country government, but also to communities living in proximity to the mining impacted most by its environmental effects.
These people, who in rural settings are often poor, must be consulted as to how the land is to be developed in an environmentally sustainable way and subsequently remediated; moreover, the mining region and its inhabitants most impacted by the mining should share in the economic benefits of the mining, while their traditional livelihoods are preserved. Benefits to the region could include roads, schools, and hospitals, resulting in long-term benefit to the region after mining has ceased."(emphasis added).
Please find an example from the news media from January 2022 or later, of a former, existing or proposed metals or minerals mine (but not fossil fuels) in Canada that you think fits this definition of sustainable mining. Explain what aspects of the mining operation make it a good example.
