3. If you were interested in studying what types of messages make people more obedient, how would you go about doing this? Design two different studies to analyze these types of communication. 4. Mead and others argue that communication can create a social reality. These theorists are sometimes called social constructionists. How does communication create a social reality? Use an example from your life to demonstrate your answer. Include a definition of intersubjectivity in your answer.
5. Define the looking glass self. Go to the PBS Frontline special on Jane Elliott's brown/blue eyes experiment. How would the looking glass self explain the differences in the children's performances from one day to the next?
6. Define interpersonal constructs and cognitive complexity. Take an example from your own life where you used an interpersonal construct in a conversation that limited how you saw the situation and caused the interaction to be less successful than you would have wished. How could have used a differing construct to achieve a better outcome?
7. What is the social function of self-disclosure? How does the law of reciprocity work in communication? Give a concrete example of the last time someone violated this law with you? How did you react?
