Case Study:
CRC has selected you to participate in a 16-week study abroad learning experience. The purpose of the learning opportunity is to build academic, professional, and personal relationships between students at the host institution and students at CRC. During the 16-week immersive learning experience, you will live with a host family while taking classes at the host university. The group will also embark on cultural field trips and learn from students about their country's cultural triumphs and challenges. Leading up to the study abroad experience, the CRC group of students has been meeting to prepare themselves for living, learning, and traveling internationally as many students have never traveled out of the United States of America.
One of the faculty administrators leading the trip learned from your application packet that you recently took COMM 325: Intercultural Communication. The administrator would like for the infographic to address the following concepts and questions:
1.) Define intercultural communication competence and how it relates to the study abroad trip.
2.) How does cultural identity development influence intercultural communication competence. What questions or concepts should students reflect on before traveling?
3.) Describe the importance of nonverbal communication in the overall communication process. What specific non-verbal information concepts should students know before traveling (i.e. haptics, chronemics, etc.)
4.) Define "culture shock" and describe strategies for reducing discomfort in culturally unfamiliar and/or ambiguous situations.
5.) Identify and describe a cultural taxonomy that explains cultural variation between CRC students and the students from the host institution. (Ex. Hall, Hofstede, Kluckhohn & Strodtbeck, etc.).
6.) Compare and contrast the communication behaviors associated with high and low context cultures.
