A new trend that is gaining traction on the apps we use on our smartphones, is dark mode or dark themed apps. The purpose of dark theme apps is two-fold. One, for many it is easier on the eyes to not have to read everything on a white background. Secondly, it provides increased battery life on devices with OLED screens. OLED screens are able to control the light output on a per pixel basis, so a black pixel is actually black with no backlight. With how involved we are with our phones, tablets, and smartwatches, any increases in battery life will increase our productivity. Many people depend on their web connected devices to get through the day, both at work and just every day life. The next release of Android, Android Q, will feature a system wide dark theme option (Rahman, 2019). By providing system level support, it will be easier for developers to ensure that their apps will work across all devices.

Another technology that is gaining traction is de-centralized virtual private networks (VPN). A VPN allows a users web traffic to be fully encrypted from end to end, which many internet users are seeking to prevent their internet traffic from being observed by Internet Service Providers or the government. A fear of VPNs though is that the provider could be forced by an ISP to allow access to their network, thus defeating the purpose of having a VPN. A decentralized, peer-to-peer VPN allows for anonymous nodes, which makes it much harder for your privacy to be invaded. One example is Mysterius VPN, which is an Android app that seeks to provide ultimate privacy for its users (Hargrave, 2019). The battle over internet privacy is sure to continue as technology grows and customers adapt.
